Poetry event at Black Cultural Center to honor women

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Poems about women is the theme of a Project Respect collaboration between Purdue University's Black Cultural Center and the Women's Resource Office on Feb. 22.

Poets from the campus community will share poems about women's talents, abilities, experiences, dreams, vision and art beyond the boundaries of race, class and sexual orientation at "Women's Art, Women's Vision, Women's Dreams … A Womanist Poetry Event!" Free and open to the public, it will be at 7 p.m. in the BCC Multipurpose Room.

"Poets will be able to express their respect and admiration for all women at this event," said BCC director Renee Thomas. "It also is a good opportunity for the entire community to honor women."

The Women's Resource Office is responsible for improving the climate for women and developing and implementing programs that address women's issues and gender-related concerns.

Project Respect is an annual series designed to increase awareness of diversity. It was first organized in 2001 and is sponsored by the Affirmative Action Office; African-American Studies and Research Center; Black Cultural Center; Purdue Convocations; Diversity Resource Office and DiversiKey; Interfraternity Council; Latino Cultural Center; Office of the Dean of Students; Office of the Provost; Panhellenic Association: Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics; Purdue Student Union Board; Purdue Student Government;  University Residences; Office of the Vice President for Human Relations; Women Studies Program; and the Women's Resource Office; Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and Indiana Transgender Rights Advocacy Alliance.
