Spotlight Organization: Students Growing Sustainable Communities

Students Growing Sustainable Communities (SGSC) is a Purdue University student organization powered by highly motivated students to grow local and global communities through sustainability-focused projects.

In Flora, Indiana the organization is moving forward sustainability education through the transformation of Carroll Elementary School’s courtyard into an environment expo and teaching area. Furthermore, SGSC is developing an iOS app to assist teachers in using iPads for teaching within the classroom and provide an interactive method for students to learn more about sustainability through fun games and by providing a virtual guide of the courtyard.

In Lafayette, Indiana the organization is powering community growth through the creation of a community garden and park in partnership with the Habitat for Humanity EPICs team and BGI.

The SGSC EPICs team is leading innovation through the creation of an automated hydroponics system in partnership with Whirlpool Corporation. The system will be installed in the Whirlpool NEWWHouse as a part of their research into more sustainable homes.

SGSC believes in a multidisciplinary approach to projects that brings together a wide range of majors from engineering to interior design to agriculture. The organization focuses on advancing and promoting sustainability through interactive projects.
