- Purdue MHSRS Travel Grant applications should be submitted through the online portal (see below) and are due by 5:00pm on February 5, 2024.
- Applicants will be notified of funding status no later than February 15, 2024.
- Abstracts are due to MHSRS on February 21, 2024.
- Meeting registration will likely open in July 2024.
Background and Purpose
The Military Health Systems Research Symposium (MHSRS) is an annual four-day network and educational symposium that draws approximately 3,500 attendees interested in health-related science impacting the warfighter and family. The MHSRS provides a collaborative setting for the exchange of information between military providers with deployment experience, research and academic scientists, international partners, and industry on research and related health care initiatives. The MHSRS brings together military, government, academia, and industry experts to share their latest research findings and challenges on topics including combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine, medical simulation and information sciences, military infectious diseases, and the radiation health effects.
This MHSRS Travel Grant Program represents an interest by the Office of Research in supporting the development of collaborations between faculty and members of the DoD medical research community. Any interested faculty member is encouraged to submit an abstract to MHSRS. The purpose of this call is to assist in providing partial support, in conjunction with support from an applicant’s home unit and/or own funds, to attend the conference, present their research, and connect with agency contacts. The Office of Research will provide support of up to $1,500 for travel per successful applicant.
The Military Health Systems Research Symposium provides a list of topics that speaking abstracts should target on their webpage. These include specific topics within the focus areas of Warfighter Medical Readiness, Expeditionary Medicine, and Warfighter Performance. Examples of previous meeting accepted abstracts are available in the archives of the MHSRS webpage, and those submitting abstracts are encouraged to review these, as they are different than abstracts at other scientific conferences faculty may be familiar with. The MHSRS request for abstracts was announced on January 5th and is open through February 21, 2024.
Eligibility
Faculty (tenure-track/tenured and research) members on the West Lafayette campus are eligible to apply for this travel grant program.
Please note: Prior to submitting an abstract to MHSRS, you must be a registered member of this MHSRS website.
Travel Grant Application Procedures
This travel award is based on a pre-approval for matching travel funds from the Office of Research, prior to the MHSRS abstract submission deadline. Final travel funds awarded by this pre-approval procedure are contingent upon acceptance of the MHSRS submitted abstract for presentation at the meeting. Any efforts not submitted through InfoReady portal will be returned without review. Submissions past the deadline will not be accepted.
A template has been developed for the MHSRS Travel Grant application submission and is available here.
Applications should include the following information as described in the template.
- Presenter Information: Include name, title and department/school
- Proposed Abstract Title: Limit of 255 characters (includes spacing)
- Proposed Co-Presenters: Provide names, titles, and institutions of any proposed co-presenters.
- Proposed Abstract Topic: Please provide a brief narrative description of your abstract topic. Limit of 300 words.
- Brief description of why you would like to attend MHSRS: Provide your goal for attending the conference. Limit of 150 words.
- History of past DoD funding or collaboration and a description of DoD programs/funding that you will target in the future: Limit of 300 words.
NOTE: For this call, the Office of Research will sponsor only research abstracts; although, MHSRS also invites Advanced Product Development Abstracts.
Abstracts to MHSRS should represent original, unpublished work. As per governmental guidelines, abstracts can be submitted to MHSRS as well as to professional scientific society meetings. Abstracts presented at other military-related or DoD meetings are ineligible for presentation at the MHSRS, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Travel Grant Application Review and Funding Process
Each Travel Grant application will be reviewed for applicability and competitiveness of the work for future DoD funding or renewal of current DoD funding. Applicants will be given a preliminary notice regarding their funding status prior to the MHSRS abstract deadline. Final funding decisions will be made following MHSRS invitations being extended in May/June (based on MHSRS published timelines). Upon abstract acceptance, applicants will be required to notify the Office of Research as to their status by June 30, 2024.
Applicants selected to present at MHSRS will have their travel reimbursed at a rate of 50% of the total costs by the Office of Research. Please note, the Office of Research funding is limited to no more than $1,500 per applicant.
