Host-A-Boiler program bringing students and local families together over the holiday break

November 24, 2015

Thanks to the new Host-A-Boiler program, 107 Purdue students who are not able to travel home for the Thanksgiving holiday will be able to spend some time during the holiday break with local families.

The new program, announced in October, invites faculty, staff and others to play host for a meal, family gathering or community event during Thanksgiving or winter break. About half of the hosts are members of the Purdue community and the others are local families.

"We are grateful to the local families for spending time with students who are not able to travel during this holiday break," said Michael Brzezinski, dean of international programs. "This is an opportunity for our students, many of who are international, to learn more about American culture, and for our local families to learn more about the students who attend Purdue."

Beth Tucker, an intercultural programs specialist from International Programs, and Lisa Berry-Wensveen, housing transition coordinator from University Residences, led the effort to recruit participating hosts and their families.

Those who are interested in hosting during the winter break should go to www.ippu.purdue.edu/HostABoiler/ to learn more about the program and sign up to be a host. The deadline for winter break is Dec. 10.
