Extension to hold 'Dining with Diabetes' program

Purdue Extension is hosting a "Dining with Diabetes" program for adults with Type 2 diabetes and their family members on how to promote better health. Registration is due Friday (Oct. 9).

"Dining with Diabetes" consists of four sessions on Oct. 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3 and a follow-up session on Dec. 8. Classes are 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lyles-Porter Hall, Room 1151 and Demonstration Kitchen (Room 1107). Free parking is available after 5 p.m.in the Harrison Street Garage, which is attached to Lyles-Porter Hall.

The program includes information on planning meals and snacks with healthy recipes, cooking demonstrations and food sampling, ideas for being more active and information on how diabetes affects overall health.

Participants will learn about reading food labels, using a variety of sweeteners, using seasoning to replace salt, the role of fiber in the diet, the difference between various types of fat, the importance of exercise and how to set personal goals to manage diabetes.

The program, which is open to the public, is $25 per person or $35 per couple. Space is limited. To register, contact Kathy Murray at 765-474-0793 or murrayk@purdue.edu by Oct. 9.
