In October, the Purdue Extension Master Gardener (EMG) Program offered a three-part virtual training series focused on invasive species and native plant alternatives for the home landscape. The series opened with “Invasive Insect Species”, presented by Bob Bruner, Exotic Pest Extension Specialist, who discussed identification, impacts, and control strategies of invasive insects. Next, Amanda Bradshaw-Burks, Purdue Extension County Educator, led “Invasive Plant Species”, highlighting key invasive plants threatening Indiana’s ecosystems. The series concluded with “Native Plants for Indiana Landscapes”, co-presented by Karen Mitchell, Home Horticulture Extension Specialist, and Amy Thompson, Beginning Farmer Coordinator. This session provided guidance on selecting and incorporating native plants to create a diverse, resilient, and visually stunning home landscape.
Thanks to the planning committee members for the EMG Advanced Training Series; John Orick, Carey Grable (ANR Educator/Marion County), Karen Mitchell and John Woodmansee (ANR Educator/Whitley County), and Pam Fisher for her behind the scenes work.
