Assistant Professor Yiwei Huang, two undergraduate landscape Architecture students, Gabby Nivar and Jennifer Kerr, together with Ball State landscape architecture professor Taylor Metz, delivered an ASLA “STEM Literacy by Design” outreach with the children studying in Acton Academy at Fall Creek at Pendleton, Indiana. The goal of national ASLA’s STEM Literacy by Design program is to host a Story Time, followed by a design charrette/activity intended for elementary-age children to become acquainted with the key themes mentioned in the book and Landscape Architecture as a STEM career. In this event, our own produced “Monsters love native blooms” book was utilized and followed by an interactive activity with the children to educate them on the unique ecological benefits of native plants, the natural habitat each plant belongs to, and where they grow them if in one’s garden.
