Garwood Orchards hosted a field day in LaPorte, IN on Thursday, 7/9, attended by approximately 60 participants, including growers, educators, students, and industry professionals. The group toured a wide range of fruit and vegetable production systems across the farm, including apple orchards at different stages of production, peaches, various berry crops, tomatoes, onions, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, and other crops. Throughout the tour, participants engaged in discussions with Purdue Extension specialists and the Garwood family about crop management, production requirements, pest and disease challenges, equipment and machinery, and other aspects of specialty crop production. The group also toured several indoor facilities, including storage and cooling spaces, produce handling and processing areas, and the farm’s apple cider press, while learning about the operation’s marketing strategies and direct-to-consumer activities. Purdue faculty and staff in attendance included Peter Hirst, Stephen Meyers, Petrus Langenhoven, and Anjali Iyer-Pascuzzi, the new Head of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. Participants enjoyed lunch and fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm and had the opportunity to connect with colleagues throughout the day.
