Karen Mitchell Shares Practical Approaches to Garden Renewal and Plant Propagation

Slide titled “One Cutting, Countless Connections: Plant Propagation with Purpose” featuring a circular tray of soil arranged with leaf cuttings in a spiral pattern.
Recently, Karen Mitchell, Consumer Horticulture Extension Specialist, delivered two horticulture programs for Extension Master Gardeners and the public. At the Marion County Spring Garden Clinic, she presented When a Tree Falls in the Garden: From Shade to Sun, equipping participants to assess site changes after tree loss and redesign the space for perennials, cut flowers, vegetables, or native plantings.

Mitchell also led a hands-on workshop, One Cutting, Countless Connections: Plant Propagation with Purpose, at the Porter County Master Gardener Association’s Annual Gardening Show. This session demonstrated practical techniques for stem tip and leaf cuttings while highlighting how sharing plant material can expand horticultural education and strengthen community outreach.
