Every Boilermaker deserves to cross the stage in style — and in the right regalia. Explore everything you need to know about what to wear, how to order it and what each color represents.

Caps, gowns, tassels and hoods are rented through your Commencement Task List in myPurdue. The tab will appear once you’ve applied to graduate, and the task list opens.

All candidates who participate in the ceremony must wear official university-approved academic attire. Keepsake or non-official gowns are not permitted.

When your attire arrives, check it immediately to confirm you received the correct gown, cap, hood (if applicable) and tassel color. Orders typically arrive within 10–14 business days. A prepaid return shipping label is included in the box — don’t throw it away! If you miss the rental deadline, limited options may be available at the University Book Store (visit the store website for hours). Refunds are available if you cancel your order before receipt or return it unopened.

To purchase keepsake items such as an extra tassel, stole or hood, email pcavazos@herffjones.com.

Reminder: Your rental order does not confirm your attendance. You must also indicate participation on your Commencement Task List before the published deadline.

What to Keep and Return

Return reminders: You’ll receive email reminders before and after your ceremony, with instructions to ensure a timely return. Late returns are subject to non-return fees.

Non-return fees:

To return: Affix the prepaid shipping label included in your box directly over the original label, then ship using the same box. If you need a new return label, visit the Herff Jones Return Management Portal to print on your own.

If your order is incorrect: Contact Herff Jones before commencement or visit the University Book Store during commencement weekend for assistance.

Participating faculty members should rent academic attire through the University Book Store by calling 1-800-347-9618.

Undergraduate and professional candidates graduating with Distinction or Highest Distinction will receive honor cords at college check-in tables in the Armory on commencement day.

Tassels, Hoods and Academic Colors

The color of your tassel and hood represents your college or school. Select your college carefully when ordering your attire.

Wear your cap (mortarboard) horizontally, with the point in the center front. Decorated mortar board caps are allowed as long as the decorations are not offensive or obstructing the view of students behind you.

  • Undergraduate and professional students: tassel on the right
  • Graduate students: tassel on the left

You may purchase a black-and-gold keepsake tassel, but graduates should wear their official academic color tassel during the ceremony.

If you’re earning two degrees in different colleges: You’ll walk with the college listed first on your graduation application. You may purchase a second tassel for your other college at Herff Jones or the University Book Store.

Undergraduate and Professional Program Colors

Each candidate is required to rent a Purdue University custom cap and gown. A black-and-gold keepsake tassel may be purchased separately, but graduates should wear their academic color tassel at the ceremony.

Tips for the Day-of Attire

  • What to wear under your gown: Lightweight, business casual attire works best.
  • Shoes: Choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes. You’ll be moving between event spaces, and many candidates spend time walking or standing during portions of the event.
  • Accessories: Avoid bulky jewelry or large hair clips that interfere with your cap.
  • Cap decorating: You may decorate your cap as long as designs are not offensive and don’t block the view of others.
  • Gown care: Lightly steam your gown if needed; avoid direct ironing.
