Course description:

This courses introduces the science policy process with a focus on the federal level. In today’s world, understanding and interacting with the federal policy process should be an expected part of a career in science and engineering. This includes the interactions between the primary science community and policy makers. The course also considers the role of advocacy and the media in the policy process. The class will emphasize strategy for advancing the policy matter from the point of view of a scientist, institution, corporation, or nonprofit entity.


Course Objectives:

1. Understand the relationship between science and public policy
2. Explore how science informs the creation or modification of policy and how policy impacts the scientific enterprise
3. Understand the federal funding process and its impact on science in the United States
4. Develop an appreciation for how advocacy can impact policy
5. Analyze, in detail, a science policy issue of the student’s choice and develop a strategy for acting on the issue
