The PUID Alias

A PUID may have an alias, which can be used in most places as an equivalent to the PUID. An alias is usually more mnemonic and thus easier to remember than a ten digit number.

Alias Assignment

Aliases are currently borrowed for PUIDs from Coordinated Purdue Career Account Logins, assigned by the Purdue University Computing Center (PUCC) to all West Lafayette staff and students.

A coordinated career account login is borrowed for use as the alias for a PUID when there is a unique correspondence between the coordinated career account login, the person's Purdue e-mail address, and the information known about the person in the PUID Oracle database.

Alias Composition

An alias contains two to eight characters. The characters may be from the sets 'a' through 'z' (lower case) and '0' through '9' (decimal digits).

No Alias - When no coordinated career account login can be borrowed for use as a PUID's alias, the PUID's alias is set to the PUID number.

Alias Field Identifier

The alias field identifier in external protocol is 'a'.
