Purdue celebrates Class of 2021 with in-person ceremonies

Purdue University celebrated the Class of 2021 with a special in-person ceremony on Saturday (May 15) at Ross-Ade Stadium. The ceremony was for all undergraduate candidates (all schools and colleges), professional candidates (Doctor of Audiology, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Doctor of Pharmacy) and master’s degree candidates. The Graduate School held its Ph.D. ceremony on Sunday (May 16) at Elliott Hall of Music for 198 doctoral candidates.

Breakthrough in seawater desalination promises better energy efficiency

Making fresh water out of seawater usually requires huge amounts of energy. The most widespread process for desalination is called reverse osmosis. Now, Purdue engineers have developed a variant of the process called “batch reverse osmosis,” which promises better energy efficiency, longer-lasting equipment and the ability to process water of much higher salinity.

Lowering costs of using solar-powered electricity when it’s not sunny

Solar power accounts for about 2% of U.S. electricity, but it could become more widespread if it were cheaper to generate this electricity and make it readily available on cloudy days and at nighttime. To lower those costs, Purdue engineers are developing ways to improve how facilities called concentrated solar power plants produce electricity.

Fire Department staff persistently keep Purdue community safe

For Justin Marvin, the 32 firefighters who make up the Purdue University Fire Department are considered family. That family serves more than 50,000 students, faculty and staff on the West Lafayette campus and is the only full-time fire department in the Big Ten Conference.
