Krannert iSEEK

Krannert initiative combats poverty with entrepreneurship

Through the Institute for Social Empowerment through Entrepreneurship and Knowledge (iSEEK), Krannert professor Alok Chaturvedi and his Purdue team teach entrepreneurship skills to people in underdeveloped areas of the world. iSEEK uses a mobile gaming and knowledge platform to reach those with the least access to education and opportunity. The goal is to connect with 1 million people in the next 10 years, helping lift them from poverty. More about iSEEK is available in the spring 2014 issue of Krannert Magazine.

Faculty, staff invited to Spring Fling on Thursday

Spring Fling, the annual appreciation event for faculty, staff, graduate student staff and retirees, is set for 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday (May 22) on and around Purdue Memorial Mall.

Spring Fling to affect mail pickup, delivery

Due to Spring Fling activities, there will be no afternoon mail pickup or delivery on Thursday (May 22). However, all morning delivery and pickup times will be normal.

The Administrative and Professional Staff Advisory Committee recognized outgoing members and new members at its luncheon and meeting on Wednesday (May 14).

Contract Owner Process adjusted

A revised Contract Owner Process, simplified and more clearly stating all responsibilities, is set to take effect June 1. The changes arose from a review within Purdue's Procurement Process Transformation that cited a need to amend and clarify these responsibilities.

Procurement Services is providing updates on several matters, including system updates in the Ariba system, guidance in using purchasing cards, and travel-related email.

The Purdue Alumni Association is seeking presenters for its "Purdue in 60" presentation to be held during Homecoming in September.

CSSAC accepting membership applications

Information has been mailed to clerical and service staff about applying for membership on the Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Committee. The application deadline is May 30.

Reminder: Xerox center forums

Faculty, staff and students are reminded that center forums with information on how to work with Xerox for print and digital services are being held in May.

System 'prints' precise drug dosages tailored for patients

Researchers have created a prototype system that uses a mathematical model to predict -- and a portable inkjet technology to produce -- precise medication dosages tailored for specific patients, an advance in personalized medicine that could improve drug effectiveness and reduce adverse reactions.

Medical device by Purdue engineers could standardize pacemaker lead stability tests

Cardiac surgeons could use a patent-pending invention by Purdue engineering students to standardize a test that determines if a pacemaker's leads, or the thin insulated wires that extend from the pacemaker, are securely embedded in heart tissue.

Capobianco wins inaugural Christian J. Foster Award

Purdue has named Brenda Capobianco, associate professor of science education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the recipient of the inaugural Christian J. Foster Award. The award, named after the former first gentleman of Purdue, recognizes a faculty member who has made transformational contributions to improving STEM teaching and learning in Indiana's K-12 schools.

Four Purdue students win national Goldwater scholarships

Four Purdue undergraduate students have received scholarships through the national Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program -- the most since 1999.

Purdue men's golf advances to NCAA Championship

The No. 45-ranked Purdue men's golf team fired a nine-over par 297 and surged past three teams at the NCAA Golf Central Regional to advance to its first NCAA Championship round since 2005 by finishing third out of 14 teams.

Women finish third, men fifth at Big Ten Outdoor Championships

The Purdue women wrapped up their best Big Ten Championships in 13 years, while the men finished with their best finish since 2009 at the Rankin Track and Field on Sunday (May 18). It came down to the final event on each side, the 4x400-meter relay, and the women moved up to third while the men claimed fifth with exciting finishes.

Bissett named Academic All-District

For his dual excellence in the diving well and the classroom, Jamie Bissett of Purdue men's swimming and diving has been selected as a Capital One Academic All-District honoree for the second year in a row.
