News for faculty and staffSeptember 4, 2009IN THE SPOTLIGHTPhoto gallery: Purdue football prepares for openerKyle Gergely, equipment manager for Purdue football, inspects a helmet as he works with student managers Cameron Isolampi and Charlie Blanchard (not pictured) in the equipment room at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility on Tuesday (Sept. 1) in preparation for Saturday's season-opening game against Toledo. When football players arrive on campus for summer camps, their helmets are solid gold. However, a transformation takes place the week prior to the first game of the season. At that time, equipment managers and student workers begin the task of placing all the decals and lettering on the helmets to create the look we know so well. About 220 "P" decals will be used for the first application and will be replaced as needed throughout the season. By season's end, the department typically goes through about 350 of the letters. There are also stripes, conference logos, text, American flags and face masks that must be put on the helmets. Prior to each game, the helmets are inspected, and receive touch-up paint and new decals if needed. A photo gallery of the helmet preparation is available here. More information about Purdue football is available on the Purdue Athletics Web site.
