Karen Plaut - April Dimensions of Discovery Introduction

April 30, 2024

Dear Colleagues,

As we end this academic yearI am struck, yet again, by the high level of recognition for excellence that our researchers regularly receive.

There are stories of professional acknowledgments, such as faculty members being elected fellows of AAAS (add link when available), AIBME and other associations as well as companies, like SK hynix and Windracers, investing in or partnering with Purdue researchers on semiconductors, AI and other areas where Purdue leads. Examples of articles in these areas include genetics research to develop a novel therapy for brain tumors (glioblastoma), biomechanical ‘task switching’ research intended to improve Parkinson’s disease diagnoses, and groundbreaking work funded through the Office of Naval Research to improve the ability of robots to operate effectively on moving surfaces.

Along with national media coverage and publication in major scientific and technical journals, Purdue discoveries regularly receive research prizes like the Edison Award that Luna Lu received for her work on concrete strength sensing systems. Meanwhile, Purdue researchers and their projects are submitting more proposals than ever before resulting in a continued increase in research awards.

Our research also has drawn high-level recognition during the recent CHIPS for America summit and campus visits from national laboratory and government leaders, such as DOE and DOD officials Geri Richmond and Heidi Shyu, and a visit and fireside chat with NSF director Sethuraman Panchanathan and U.S. Senator Todd Young.

These events and accolades underscore how highly the world values Purdue and the significant impact of our research programs. Thank you to all faculty, staff and students who work tirelessly to make groundbreaking achievements that we all enjoy. We so appreciate what you do!

Thanks,

Karen Plaut
Executive Vice President for Research
