SMAW Applications 311

Provided by: Tooling U - SME

This class provides an overview of how to perform shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), important variables to consider, and how to prevent common defects. It is important to select appropriate electrodes and base metals for SMAW and prepare them for welding. Welders must also choose proper arc starting methods, bead types, and travel speeds and know how to effectively break and re-start the arc when necessary. Common SMAW discontinuities include porosity, undercut, incomplete penetration, excessive penetration, and incomplete fusion. After taking this class, users will be familiar with many of the considerations and variables that go into performing SMAW. A good understanding of these concepts helps prevent welders from producing irregular or defective welds.
