Mental Health Awareness Week to include Healthy Boiler workshops

As part of Purdue’s inaugural Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), and in support of the behavioral health, physical health and social wellness pillars of the Healthy Boiler Program, Human Resources is bringing three mental health-based workshops to campus. Healthy Boiler workshops are free to benefits-eligible employees and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan.

Alcoholism in the family affects how your brain switches between active and resting states

You don’t have to be a drinker for your brain to be affected by alcoholism. A new study shows that just having a parent with an alcohol use disorder affects how your brain transitions between active and resting states – regardless of your own drinking habits. The study, performed by researchers at Purdue and the Indiana University School of Medicine, discovered that the brain reconfigures itself between completing a mentally demanding task and resting.

Injectable drug for faster healing of bone fractures prepares for clinical trials

One in three adults age 60 and over suffering from a hip fracture dies within one year. Now, a Purdue-affiliated startup is moving closer to the start of clinical trials for a novel injectable drug that is targeted to heal broken bones faster and strengthen weak bones.

Apps could take up less space thanks to new ‘streaming’ software

If you resort to deleting apps when your phone’s storage space is full, researchers have a solution. New software “streams” data and code resources to an app from a cloud server when necessary, allowing the app to use only the space it needs on a phone at any given time.
