Purdue to activate the all-hazards outdoor sirens,
conduct evacuation drills during BGR

Purdue will conduct evacuation drills and test its all-hazards outdoor emergency warning sirens this week during Boiler Gold Rush, the orientation program for new students. The University's campus sirens are scheduled to be activated at 4:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 16). New students also will be evacuated from Elliott Hall of Music during one of two sessions Friday to demonstrate the procedures associated with building evacuations.

When it comes to archaeology, people often think of Egypt and its grand pyramids, royalty and dynasties. So what else is there to learn about ancient civilizations? The story of Professor Michele Buzon and her team’s excavation of the archaeological site Tombos in modern-day Sudan is featured as part of Purdue’s "Boiler Bytes" video series.

The first moon landing may have occurred a half-century ago, but Apollo 11 flight director Gene Kranz remembers the mission like it was yesterday. Just two days before the landmark event’s 50th anniversary, he shared personal recollections during a sold-out talk in Purdue’s Loeb Playhouse, “Go/No-Go: The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.”

Corn maze to celebrate
Purdue’s 150th; part of
national contest vote

Exploration Acres, Northwest Indiana’s largest corn maze and pumpkin patch, has created an 18-acre corn maze commemorating Purdue’s “150 Years of Giant Leaps.” The maze, located near Lafayette, will open to the public on Sept. 13. While anticipating that, people can vote for it through Aug. 26 in a national corn maze contest.
