Larry DeBoer, professor of agricultural economics, always thought students in his macroeconomics course would benefit from applying course concepts in short written essays. But with more than 300 students in his lecture course, administering a writing assignment seemed impossible. Gradient, an online writing and peer assessment tool developed by ITaP, changed DeBoer's mind, turning an impractical aspiration into a manageable course staple.

Purdue Today special issue
A special Board of Trustees issue of Purdue Today will be sent Friday (July 18) at the conclusion of the board's scheduled meeting. The agenda for the meeting, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Stewart Center, Room 326, is available on the Board of Trustees website.
The official University holiday schedule for fiscal year 2015-16 is now available on the Human Resources website. The page also provides the schedule for 2014-15. For more information, contact the HR Service Center at 49-42222 or hr@purdue.edu.
Paid personal holidays and paid personal business days for fiscal year 2014-15 became available for use starting July 2. Neither personal holidays nor personal business days carry over from one fiscal year to the next.
Purdue Surplus Store will host an office supply exchange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29 in Stewart Center, Room 302.
Orders for toner and ink should be placed through the Cannon IV catalog, Purdue's primary toner/ink provider, within Ariba. For items unavailable in Cannon IV, orders can be placed with GovConnection, the secondary toner/ink provider.
Discovery Learning Research Center will celebrate student achievement in four programs July 30 during the annual Undergraduate Student Recognition Luncheon, accompanied by a poster session. Registration is required by Monday (July 21).

Michael B. Cline, vice president for physical facilities, participated in Gov. Mike Pence's Blue Ribbon Panel on Transportation Infrastructure over the course of the past year. Last week, the panel submitted a report inclusive of 25 recommendations related to transportation infrastructure to Pence.
Purdue's College of Agriculture and Agricultural Alumni Association are now accepting nominations for two of their top awards that honor the achievement of alumni and others.

Researchers from Purdue and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have discovered a soybean gene whose mutation affects plant stem growth, a finding that could lead to the development of improved soybean cultivars for the northern United States.

An assessment specialist for the Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Effectiveness is using Purdue's backchannel discussion and polling platform -- called Hotseat -- to poll parents of incoming students on questions related to advising and registration. The exercise helps reinforce parents' understanding of how Purdue operates and exposes them to experiences their children may have in large lectures.
Indiana's corn is showing potential to produce a bumper crop for the second consecutive year, but much of it could "suffer quickly" if growing conditions turn unfavorable, Purdue Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen says.
