In the Spotlight
When continuing lecturer Kelly Blanchard redesigned her sophomore-level economics courses in summer 2012, she aimed to increase the value of class time for the 1,400 students she teaches each semester. Hotseat, a real-time discussion application developed by ITaP, provided a big boost, engaging students and showing her what concepts need more attention for students to comprehend them.

Thomas Hertel, Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Economics, will present the Research and Scholarship Distinguished Lecture at 1:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 18) as part of his selection as winner of the inaugural 2013 Purdue University Research and Scholarship Distinction Award, Purdue's most prestigious research honor outside the natural sciences.
Andrew Weiner, the Scifres Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will present the annual McCoy Distinguished Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 18) as part of his selection as winner of the 2013 Herbert Newby McCoy Award, Purdue's most prestigious research honor in the natural sciences.
ITaP is announcing a new security scanning tool that helps system and network administrators take a more preventive approach in protecting the University's sensitive data. The McAfee Vulnerability Manager has helped administrators detect and patch weaknesses in Purdue systems that previously went undetected.
A panel discussion Friday (Nov. 15) by five international PhD students will present their insights into how cultural and institutional factors influence their experiences in teaching at Purdue.
General news
Richard Buckius, Purdue's vice president for research, will testify this morning (Nov. 13) in Washington, D.C., before a congressional panel.
Purdue and GE have entered into a university-industry partnership that exemplifies a new approach to expediting the academia-based technology commercialization process.
Purdue's Department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) has received a five-year grant to develop a curriculum for child development centers supported by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Holiday shoppers can expect less-expensive turkeys and moderate price increases on other Thanksgiving staples this holiday season, a Purdue Extension agricultural economist says.

Game notes are available to preview the Purdue-Penn State football matchup at noon Saturday (Nov. 16) in University Park, Pa. The game will air on the Big Ten Network.
Kickoff for Purdue's Nov. 23 home game against Illinois has been set for noon. The game offers the annual CSSAC-Athletics discount to regular employees of Purdue.
