In the Spotlight
When disaster strikes, some people emerge stronger and some do not. Whether in response to the ravages of nature, the impact of war, or the pitfalls of daily life, some among us prevail while others struggle.
College of Liberal Arts faculty in history, sociology, and political science are examining the concept of resilience, seeking to better understand the conditions, external and internal, that lead to different outcomes. Their research assesses the risk factors that might affect the ability to be resilient, where the ability to adapt well is prevalent, how communities can develop resilient qualities before a disaster strikes, and what we can learn from survivors. The Administrative and Professional Staff Advisory Committee (APSAC) will hold a brown-bag lunch and presentation for West Lafayette campus staff members on June 20.
Purdue will host a no-fee virtual summer school on high-performance computing for science and engineering July 8-10 and July 29-Aug. 2. The sessions are for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and professionals from government and industry looking to gain skills in data-intensive and many-core computing.

The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) recently named Purdue Dining & Catering, a division of Housing and Food Services, the winner of a Gold Award for Energy and Water Conservation. The award recognizes several initiatives promoting sustainability.
The Hanna Community Center has received Purdue's 2013 Exemplary Community Partner Award.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in a survey about recycling signage and containers. Its results will be used to develop related standards on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.
People consuming energy drinks as a cool way to beat the summer heat need to be aware of serving sizes, stimulant ingredients and possible medication interactions before increasing the amount they drink, says a Purdue expert.
Purdue aerospace engineering major Trevor Johnson wants a career designing aircraft, and that requires knowing how to use a supercomputer to project the effects of a design on key performance factors such as the way air flows over an aircraft's body and wings.
Purdue's Lawson Computer Science Building will be transformed into a crime lab for the Adventures in Computer Science Summer Camp on June 23-28.

Lauren Gustafson's dual excellence as a student-athlete for Purdue women's swimming and diving has led to a long list of individual awards during the 2012-13 school year, punctuated Thursday by her selection as a Capital One first-team Academic All-America honoree.
