Bryce Carlson

Purdue professor to take on
four ultra marathons

This summer, Bryce Carlson will tackle what he calls one of the biggest challenges of his life. Carlson, assistant professor of anthropology, will run four 100-mile ultra marathons in the Midwest Grand Slam of Ultrarunning race series. Carlson says there is much to love in the sport of running, and he has come to embrace what he calls the self-transformative nature of ultrarunning in particular.

Purdue's Board of Trustees on Friday (May 10) approved placing future non-exempt employees in a defined contribution retirement and savings plan, providing a competitive retirement savings program while reducing costs for the University.

New two-hour University vehicle parking limit in north academic campus starting May 28

University vehicle parking spaces within the north academic campus, including those located on the main level of the Grant Street Parking Garage, will be limited to two-hour parking beginning May 28. The north academic campus includes the area bound by State Street, University Street, Stadium Avenue and Northwestern Avenue.

3-D print shapes created using new design tool, bare hands

A new design tool interprets hand gestures, enabling designers and artists to create and modify three-dimensional shapes using only their hands as a "natural user interface" instead of keyboard and mouse.

Colorful vegetables are promoted as key to a healthy diet, but white vegetables, especially potatoes, shouldn't be forgotten, according to a Purdue expert.

Purdue innovation could help people with
severe hearing loss

Mel Chua, a Purdue doctoral candidate in engineering education, received her current set of hearing aids in May 2012. She has severe hearing loss but has not worn hearing aids most of her adult life because they did not offer a significant improvement to her hearing. An innovation developed by a Purdue researcher in the College of Health and Human Sciences may make it possible for people with severe hearing loss, like Chua, to hear high-frequency sounds like "s," "sh," "f" and "th."

Tennis camp dates announced

The Purdue men's tennis team will host three tennis camps this summer at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Purdue's camps will take place June 16-20, June 23-27 and July 28-Aug. 1.

Men's basketball learns 2013-14 Big Ten single-play opponents

The Purdue men's basketball program has learned that it will face Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Michigan State just once each during the 2013-14 regular season, as the Big Ten shared the league's single-play matchups for the upcoming campaign on Tuesday.
