Krannert prof brings the
'dismal science' to life

Economics professor John Umbeck gets many questions from his students, especially those who come from disciplines outside of business. In recent years, however, one of the most recurring queries is if he has read "Freakonomics."

The answer, of course, is yes. In fact, he's a fan and colleague-in-spirit of the book's co-author, University of Chicago professor Steven Levitt. And why wouldn't he be? The best seller's central premise, that economic incentives drive people's behavior, has long been a staple of Umbeck's research and teaching. Krannert Magazine highlights Umbeck's research here.

The School of Nursing will begin employee wellness screenings for spring semester on Monday (Jan. 14).

Recreation center users encouraged to use west parking lots

Administrators at the France A. Córdova Recreational Sports Center encourage Purdue employees who use the facility to take advantage of the more than 600 parking spaces located just northwest of the building.

New tool to help brain surgeons one step closer
to operating room

A new tool that could allow for faster, more comprehensive testing of brain tissue during surgery successfully identified the cancer type, grade and tumor margins in five brain surgery patients, according to a Purdue and Brigham and Women's Hospital study.

Purdue-focused episode of BTN 'LiveBIG' to air Monday

BTN's new series, "BTN LiveBIG," continues Monday (Jan. 14) with stories highlighting how the Purdue community is making an impact in West Lafayette and around the world by developing electric vehicles to conserve resources, building basic utility vehicles for use in developing countries and by partnering with organizations that help give at-risk teens a better life.

Men's and women's tennis to host Meet the Team event

The Purdue men’s and women’s tennis teams will host a Meet the Team event on Friday night (Jan. 11) at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermaker teams will greet fans, distribute posters, sign autographs, and host a free clinic at 6-7:30 p.m.
