Welcome back from President Córdova


 As we begin a new year and a new semester, I would like to take this occasion to wish everyone happiness, health and success in 2008. I hope the holiday season for each of you was joyous and that you were able to share this special time with loved ones. My husband, Chris, and I were blessed with a visit from our children Anne and Stephen. Together, we experienced our first Boilermaker bowl victory and built a Westwood snowman during our first Indiana snowstorm. More

Provost invites discussion on scholarly communication

Purdue faculty, staff, students, and researchers are invited to discuss scholarly communication issues using a recently launched blog.  Interim Provost Vic Lechtenberg has appointed and charged a task force to inform campus on issues related to scholarly communication. The task force, chaired by Dean of Libraries James L. Mullins, created the blog, https://scholarly.lib.purdue.edu, for campus feedback and discussion. More

Northwestern/Stadium corner to have right-turn restriction

The Indiana Department of Transportation soon will restrict traffic heading eastbound on Stadium Avenue from turning right on red onto southbound Northwestern Avenue. More

Faculty survey results show positive shift

Results from a 2006 survey of West Lafayette faculty show a positive shift in overall satisfaction with Purdue, compared with data gathered in 2001. More

HealthyPurdue 2008 begins

People participating in Healthy Purdue 2008 have more time and more options to complete their apples. This year, the tracking of qualifying activities began Jan. 2.  The earlier start date means that participants will receive credit for completing apples even if they haven't finished their HealthPath Questionnaire, which is now available. More

Small Animal Teaching Hospital offers discount on tracking devices for current patients

Purdue faculty and staff whose pets are currently active patients at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital can get a discount on microchip implants for their pet at a special clinic on Jan. 12. More

'Electrospray' droplet research yields surprising, practical results

Droplet forming from a liquid
Chemical engineers at Purdue are the first to mathematically describe precisely how droplets form when liquids are exposed to electric fields, an advance that could have applications in areas ranging from manufacturing to medical diagnostics.

The technique of using small droplets created by subjecting liquids to electric fields is vital for a variety of applications, from a type of industrial painting called electrospraying, to a method for analyzing molecules in analytical chemistry, to manufacturing tiny micro- and nanoparticles for research and industry. More

Civil rights lawyer Dees to speak at Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

Morris Dees

A lecture by award-winning civil rights trial lawyer Morris Dees on Jan. 21 is one of several events during Purdue's 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. celebration "Affirming the Dream XIII: Walk the Talk."

Dees is co-founder and chief trial counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in Loeb Playhouse. More

Literary Reading Series brings Indiana author, Colts fan to Purdue

An author whose latest book parallels the obstacles in her love life with those of her favorite football team, the Indianapolis Colts, will speak Jan. 28 as part of  Purdue's Literary Reading Series.

Cathy Day will read from and discuss her new memoir "Comeback Season: How I Learned to Play the Game of Love," at 7:30 p.m. in the Hicks Undergraduate Library Bookstall. The story, which will be published by Simon and Schuster's Free Press on Jan. 29, compares the obstacles of her love life with the wins and losses of the Indianapolis Colts. More

Students get down to business at entrepreneurship workshop

The Entrepreneurship Youth Institute, presented by the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) and sponsored by Indiana WIRED, will take place Jan. 29 at Stewart Center on Purdue University's West Lafayette campus. While there is no cost for the 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. workshop, enrollment is limited to students and teachers within the 14 counties that make up the Indiana WIRED region. More
