Hanley Hall celebration to focus on families, leadership

A new $11.5 million facility aimed at fostering research on families, aging and leadership will move one step closer to reality today (Oct. 29) with a ceremony to celebrate the success of fundraising efforts.

Bill and Sally Hanley Hall will house the Human Development Institute, which will include programs and centers from the College of Consumer and Family Sciences and the Purdue Center for Aging and the Life Course. More

Dalai Lama visits Purdue

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, greeted the 6,000-plus audience at Elliott Hall of Music on Friday (Oct. 26) before presenting his talk on "Cultivating Happiness." The Dalai Lama's Purdue appearance was part of his weeklong visit to Indiana and was presented by the Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington, Ind., and Purdue Convocations in cooperation with Purdue's College of Liberal Arts. Neil Armstrong sculpture, lunar footprints, unveiled

Purdue unveiled a bronze sculpture of alumnus Neil Armstrong on Friday (Oct. 26) as a prelude to Saturday's (Oct. 27) dedication ceremony for a new engineering research and education building named for the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

The statue, accompanied by a trail of sculpted moon boot impressions and other symbolic features, is situated in front of the new Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering. More

Appointments, promotions, honors

— Christina Wright will begin duties as director of development for the College of Consumer and Family Sciences effective Nov. 5.
— A coordinator with the Purdue University Conference Division will serve as a regional director for the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International. Kathryn Walters was elected to the two-year position by AACED-I members at the organization's regional meeting, which took place Oct. 12 at Hope College in Holland, Mich.
— Michael T. O'Hair, associate dean of engagement in the College of Technology, has been selected to receive the Conference on Industry Education Collaboration engineering technology division's Best Session Award for "Creative Partnership Between Industry and Education II: Student Recruitment -- A Common Goal," which he presented at the organization's recent meeting.
— Former Purdue President Steven C. Beering, current chairman of the National Science Board, recently received the Institute of Industrial Engineers' Honorary Member Award at the association's annual conference.
