Appointments, honors, activities

Appointments and promotions:

— Christina Wright will begin duties as director of development for the College of Consumer and Family Sciences effective Nov. 5. Wright, a 2006 Purdue graduate, was previously employed as bank sales manager at Salin Bank and Trust Co.

Campus activities:

— The Barbara Cook Chapter of Mortar Board recently held its eighth annual Horizons Dessert Reception to honor the academic achievements of outstanding sophomores in the Horizons Program, which encourages low-income, disabled or first-generation college students to strive for academic excellence. Students who earned at least a 3.0 GPA during their freshman year were honored. Shavonne Holton, a former Horizons student who served as the 2005-06 Mortar Board president, was the keynote speaker. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service.

— Purdue Village is sponsoring a block party from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday (Oct. 26) for its undergraduate residents and their friends and family in town for Homecoming. The party in the center parking lot between buildings 1309, 1317, 1325 and 1333 includes free food, activities and a live band.

 

Faculty and staff honors:

— A coordinator with the Purdue University Conference Division will serve as a regional director for the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International. Kathryn Walters was elected to the two-year position by AACED-I members at the organization's regional meeting, which took place Oct. 12 at Hope College in Holland, Mich. She will represent the region at the association's national conference in Las Vegas in March. Along with events coordinated by the Purdue Conferences Division, Walters will coordinate the Region 8 ACCED-1 meeting, which will take place Oct. 15-18, 2008, at Purdue. Established in 1980, ACCED-I is an organization composed of more than 1,400 campus professionals who design, market, coordinate and plan conferences or special events on college or university campuses throughout the world.

— Michael T. O'Hair, associate dean of engagement in the College of Technology, has been selected to receive the Conference on Industry Education Collaboration engineering technology division's Best Session Award for "Creative Partnership Between Industry and Education II: Student Recruitment – A Common Goal," which he presented at the organization's recent meeting. He will receive the award Feb. 13 at a ceremony at the organization's awards breakfast in New Orleans.

— Former Purdue President Steven C. Beering, current chairman of the National Science Board, recently received the Institute of Industrial Engineers' Honorary Member Award at the association’s annual conference. The award is the highest honor the organization grants to a non-member. Beering received the award from Kenneth J. Musselman, strategic collaboration director for the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering in Purdue University's Discovery Park. Musselman currently serves as president-elect and chief financial officer of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
