Short Title: Atmos Remote Sensing
Description: Introduction to the quantitative retrieval of meteorological variables from satellite-borne sensors. Satellite orbital mechanics and sensor technology. Review of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. Fredholm integral equations of the first kind and their solution; linear and nonlinear, statistical and physical retrieval algorithms. Applications of satellite remote sensing in atmospheric science. Course grade will be based in part on the computer programming project in which the student develops and implements algorithms for inverting observed or simulated satellite observations.
