Description: Overview of earthquake engineering; role of civil engineer in planning and designing for earthquakes; seismic hazard analysis. Methods of analysis for seismic loads: response spectra; uniform building code; time history; linear and nonlinear methods; multi-degree of freedom systems. Soil-structure interaction effects; liquefaction; dynamic analysis of earth dams and retaining structures; seismic evaluation of tailings dams and waste containment facilities. Prerequisite: CE 58700.
