Description: Theory and applications of methodological approaches explicitly addressed to heuristic or approximate optimization of mathematical (primarily discrete) models. Worst-case/expected-case/empirical approaches to evaluating heuristic schemes, generic greedy, truncated exponential and local search algorithms, and approaches not usually considered mathematical programming, such as artificial intelligence search and interactive optimization. Emphasis on viewing available results as generic methodology that can be studied in the same algorithmic framework as exact methods. Prerequisite: IE 53500, 53700.
