Description: Biochemistry, microbial ecology, and environmental organic chemistry relating to the transformation and biodegradation of environmental pollutants are examined. The influence of the chemical structure of pollutants and environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, pH, redox) on microbial transformations is emphasized. Additional topics include discussion of past field studies and potential future use of microorganisms in engineered systems for environmental bioremediation, and the integration of physical and chemical remediation processes with biological processes.
