Description: This course provides students an opportunity to work with a community partner in evaluating a new intergenerational learning center that will house an early childhood education (ECE) program for infants and toddlers, parenting classes, and existing adult literacy and job training programs under one roof. Students in this class will participate in an evaluation research study that will help the community partner understand what types of families are participating in their programs, what parents and staff see as program strengths and limits, and whether programs are having the intended effects. Through readings, lectures, and discussion, students will learn about: (a) parenting styles and parent-child interaction, (b) children's social and emotional development, (c) early childhood education programs, (d) culture, immigration, and family relationships, and (e) evaluation research methods. Students will spend several class sessions observing children and parents at the intergenerational learning center. Students also will be involved in conducting, transcribing, and/or analyzing interview and observational data. Course assignments include writing research abstracts, reflection papers, and a research paper (e.g., case studies of families participating at the center).
