BIOL 542Z - Exploring The Living Cell

Effectivity: 08/20/2007 - 12/15/2007 @ Purdue West Lafayette Traditional
Credits: 1
Instructional Types: Lab
Usually Offered: fal spr
Short Title: Explor The Living Cell
Description: In this five-week module, students will learn how to observe and analyze cellular stucture and dynamic behavior of living cells. We will utilize the live cell imaging techniques to visualize molecules, cellular sturctures and organelles by use of fluorescence dyes and fluorescent proteins tagged with jellyfish green fluorescent protein (GFP) and its color variants. Specimens may include cultured cells, as well as live tissues, from animal and plant systems. We plan to perform transiet expression of GFP-tagged proteins, bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis, monitoring of cell cycle protein behavior during mitosis, and observation of the cytoskeleton and organelles in growing cells. Live specimens will be observed under stereo-dissecting, conventional, and confocal fluorescence microscopes. Images will be acquired, digitized, and analyzed by computational programs.
