Description: This class will focus on how and why Americans living at particular times and places used and transformed their environment. Examining such familiar topics as colonization, the frontier, the industrial revolution, slavery, the Civil War, and the emergence of modern-day consumer culture, the class will show how the interaction of Americans with the natural world has influenced the development of a distinctive society.
