Short Title: The Chicago Renaissanc
Description: In this course, we will examine the political ideologies, cultural productions, and community activism of the Chicago Black Renaissance (1930 to 1955). The course will be interdisciplinary, drawing from primary sources and recent scholarship in history, sociology, literature, music, art, and political science. Readings include works by Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker Alexander, and Margaret Burroughs. Community institutions to be studied include the South Side YMCA, the South Side Community Arts Center, Parkway Community House, and a variety of community organizations. Students will engage in archival research at several research centers in Chicago. The course will include at least one Chicago site visit.
