Description: Political process and government structure in the Russian state. Political institutions inherited from tsarist empire and the Soviet state 1917-1991, history of subsequent political reform. Political problems of ethnic conflict, creating democratic institutions, and transition from socialism to market economy. Graduate students will do some extra reading, write a term paper, and participate in regular discussion sessions led by the instructor.
