Effectivity: 08/20/2007 - 12/15/2007 @ Purdue West Lafayette Traditional
Credits: 3
Instructional Types: Lec
Usually Offered: fal
Short Title: Sem In Humor Theories
Description: The seminar introduces the major types of humor theories, both historically and the state of the art. Humor is presented and studies as a universal humor faculty whose exploration is informative of how the human mind works and is related to a number of contributing disciplines. Leading among them is the linguistics of humor, dominated in the last quarter-century by Raskin's Script-based Semantic Theory of Humor, and its revision, with Salvatore Attardo, the General Theory of Verbal Humor. Depending on the composition of the seminar and the interests of its participants, the multidisciplinary seminar will place more or less emphasis on the various perspectives of humor research. The students will be expected to write a research paper in humor. They will be strongly encouraged to relate the topic to their own research interests. The course is taught in the Macintosh-equipped instructional laboratory, and all the materials for the course are available on-line. Further reading will be suggested on request.
