Description: Development and application of concepts and techniques required for optimization of systems in which design freedom exists. ("Systems" may be biological, economic, mechanical...). Topics covered include dynamic programming, the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, interrelationships with the calculus of variations, and solutions in the presence of system constraints. Introduction to direct techniques of solution for both functional and parameter optimization problems. Computer solutions required.
