Credits: 3
Instructional Types: Lec
Usually Offered: fal spr
Short Title: Art Museum Practices
Description: This course introduces students to art museums as social institutions, as places for the documentation and exhibition of works of art, and as buildings that reflect contemporary cultural attitudes and the style of individual architects. Students learn about the many different kinds of professional activities that take place in museums, such as the research and authentication of art objects by curatorial departments, fund-raising and the acquisition of works of art, the mounting and installation of exhibitions, the technique of restoring museum objects, and the educational role museums play. The design of museum structures to show their holdings to the best advantage is another important topic. The class as a whole also prepares an historically oriented exhibition to present to the local viewing public. Finally, the career opportunities available to those who choose to enter the museum world professionally are discussed.
