Description: | This course examines the works of American women poets writing after World War II, specifically Adrienne Rich, Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, Lucille Clifton, Louise Gluck, and Louise Erdrich. The main focus will be close reading of the poetry, but we will also consider the poetic expression of racial and ethnic female identity (Clifton and Erdrich), the articulating of the personal through place (Bishop), the inventing of a radical feminist poetic voice (Rich), poetic power and the dramatizing of psychological pain (Plath and Gluck), and the crafting of an intricate poetic sequence (Gluck's The Wild Iris).
