Description: | This seminar will involve an intense engagement with the poetry of two later members of "the school of Donne," George Herbert and Andrew Marvell. We will read Herbert's entire collection, The Temple, and a great number of the poems of Andrew Marvell. Discussions will largely be devoted to close analysis of specific texts, but will also involve probes into current critical controversies and engagements in problems in literary theory. All critical approaches are welcome. Students are expected to be curious, speculative, and tenacious. Relevant critical studies will be assigned alongside with the poems. Course requirements include regular participation in class discussion, a class presentation resulting in a short essay, and a final extended critical paper. All projects will be designed in close consultation with the professor.. |
