Description: In this course we look at the complexities and subtleties of various conceptualizations of modernity by Arab thinkers and intellectuals from the early modern era to the present. Arab encounters with the West, especially after the Napoleonic Expedition, are key factors in the various readings of modernity by Arab writers. These interactions have also generated a new interest in 'tradition' as Arab societies have become increasingly influenced by Western imperial powers and have grappled with questions such as identity, the meaning of the past, and the value of Arab-Islamic cultural legacy.
