Short Title: Teaching/Learning Nano
Description: This course focuses on issues of teaching and learning that are relevant and specific to nanoscience education at the pre-college level, with a particular focus on grades 7-12. We will examine nanoscience education in relation to topics such as learning theories, curriculum and standards, inquiry, assessment, nature of science, STS, and teacher professional development. Students will: (a) develop familiarity with the ?big ideas? in nanoscience; (b) learn to critically analyze a current science education document or a gr. 7-12 textbook to determine how the big ideas fit into existing academic standards and curricula; (c) develop a nanoscience lesson plan and critically reflect upon the lesson design; and (d) write and present a scholarly paper related to a salient nanoscience education issue. Finally, students will become familiar with nanoscience education resources and Purdue researchers engaged in nano research and technology development.
