Description: This course aims to survey diverse design disciplines within modern and contemporary times in order to expose fundamental design principles. Major developments in design will be investigated through images and readings, that include: Victorian, Aesthetic, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Moderne, De Stijl, Constructivism, Bauhaus, International Modern, Pop-Modern, Post-modern and High-Tech. Each section will explore thematic examples from various design disciplines in order to expose underlying philosophical constructs that animate material constructions. Exams and assignments will address both the objectives of the course and individual interests. As a graduate seminar, in depth discussion both written and verbal of relevant topics will be required.
