Description: | Students have the option of choosing to work on either the soft tissue surgery service, the orthopedic/neurosurgery service, or both services (comprehensive). Students are given more primary responsibility for case management, including acting as the primary surgeon when appropriate cases are available. Students are expected to gain more in-depth working knowledge of various anesthetic protocols and be able to use a ventilator. Students are expected to develop more advanced diagnostic and surgical skills to enable them to manage more complex cases such as various fractures (utilizing bone plating, sophisticated external fixator configurations), cruciate and patellar surgeries, diaphragmatic hernias, thoracotomies, and spinal surgeries in small dogs. Cadavers are utilized to supplement clinical experience. Students with an interest in experimental surgery may have the opportunity to participate in research projects within or outside of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Total clinic hours 212. |
