Credits: 3
Instructional Types: Lec
Usually Offered: fal spr sum
Short Title: Intro Cultures Africa
Description: The primary objective of this course is to provide students with an ethnographic overview of Africa. I will accomplish this by providing an anthropological approach to the study of culture in Africa. This anthropological approach will include a brief overview of the geography, archaeology, history, and linguistics of Africa as well as a more in depth description and discussion of some of the various ethnic groups of the region. The ethnographic information described and discussed in this course will concern the familial, political, educational, religious, and/or economical social institutions of the cultures possessed by ethnic groups in contemporary Africa. Dynamic examples of each of these specific social institutions as they are/were expressed by African ethnic groups presented in class are described and discussed as well. An emphasis will placed on those peoples and cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically, the course will focus on the major ethnic groups of the Senegambia region of West Africa, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. This includes ethnic groups such as the Jola, Mandinka, Yoruba, and Amhara. Upon completion of the course, the students will have a general knowledge and understanding of the sociocultural and historical dynamics of various peoples and cultures of Africa.
