Description: | Procedures for the in situ testing of soils for engineering purposes are examined in detail. Included are the SPT, pressuremeter, vane shear test, cone penetrometers, screw plate, bore hold shear device, dilatometer, and seismic techniques. Applications of the results to geotechnical engineering analyses are discussed. An introduction to geotechnical field instrumentation is given. Emphasis is on the purpose, planning, and evaluation of instrumentation data, with examples from geotechnical practice. Laboratory exercises provide field experience with a number of in situ testing devices and instruments. A term paper is required. Prerequisite: CE 68300. |
