William “Bill” Dudley Jr. is President and CEO of Bechtel Group, a post he assumed in 2014 after serving six years as the company’s president and chief operating officer.
Dudley grew up in Indianapolis, the son of a Purdue civil engineer who ran a local construction business. Dudley earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1974 from Purdue and his MBA from the University of Houston. He currently serves on the board of the Engineering Advisory Council at Purdue.
Dudley joined Bechtel in 1981 and has held a number of engineering, project management and executive management positions within the company, many of which took him around the world. In 2008, he became Bechtel’s president and chief operating officer, overseeing all of the company’s business units: Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Infrastructure, Mining & Metals, and Nuclear, Security & Environmental.
He became president of the Oil, Gas & Chemicals business unit in 2001, assumed sponsorship of the Mining & Metals business unit’s Latin America and Oceania regions in 2003 and added sponsorship of Asia in 2004. Previously, he was located in London, where he served as president of Bechtel’s Europe, Africa, Middle East, Southwest Asia organization, before which he served as Bechtel’s general manager for Southeast Asia, country manager for Thailand, and general manager of Bechtel’s pipeline business in Asia.
Dudley began his career as an engineer with Fluor Corp., where he spent seven years serving in Los Angeles, Chicago and South Africa on projects ranging from coal-fired power plants to multibillion-dollar oil-for-coal projects.
Dudley is a member of the Business Roundtable and actively participates in numerous charitable organizations. In 2011, he received a Distinguished Engineering Alumni award from the Purdue College of Engineering.
