TEDxPurdueU Breakout Session: The financial crisis of 2008

January 23, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – TEDxPurdueU, Purdue University's independently organized TED conference, will present the breakout session "The Financial Crisis of 2008" at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

The session will feature a screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary, "Inside Job," that argues the 2008 financial crisis was caused by the reckless behavior of an out-of-control industry. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by David Hummels, dean of the Krannert School of Management. Panelists include the film's key participants and some of the nation's most prominent financiers, economic commentators, and regulators.

 Event panelists:

* Daniel Alpert, founding managing partner, Westwood Capital.

* Jerome Fons, former managing director, Moody's.

* Robert Gnaizda, founder, Greenlining Institute.

* Michael Greenberger, former deputy director, Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

* Charles Morris, author, "The Two-Trillion Dollar Meltdown."

"The global financial crisis of 2008 was a monumentally destructive economic event, but it was no accident and many foresaw the impending collapse. Our panelists were some of those who raised early warnings, and will debate what changes to the system have been enacted since," said Aaron Chandran, executive director of TEDxPurdueU.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by Krannert School of Management and Dawn or Doom.

About TEDx

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers lead discussion and connection in a small group. These events are branded TEDx, where x = an independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized, subject to certain rules and regulations.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to "ideas worth spreading." Starting as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, it has grown to support multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available free, at http://new.ted.com/. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, Calif., along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, California; the annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include http://new.ted.com/, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide; and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED's stage.
