Purdue takes action following reported sexual assault

January 23, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - On Thursday (Jan. 22), the Purdue University Police Department was notified by another university’s law enforcement agency that one of its students reported having been sexually assaulted by a Purdue student. Immediately upon notification, PUPD began a criminal investigation. Following execution of a search warrant, the student was taken into custody for questioning and later arrested.

Since the time of the arrest, Purdue University President Mitch Daniels was briefed on the matter and the following actions have been taken:

* The student has been summarily suspended from Purdue University.

* PUPD has issued a Persona non Grata prohibiting the individual from being on campus at any time or for any reason.

* The fraternity where the alleged assault took place has been notified by the Office of the Dean of Students that it is summarily suspended as a Recognized Student Organization. Until such time that a complete investigation can be conducted to determine specific violations and/or possible sanctions, the summary suspension prohibits the organization from operating and from participating in any events, activities or functions sponsored by Purdue University, and prohibits the organization from receiving any benefits and/or services that would be provided to a recognized organization. The organization and its members will be expected to cooperate fully and at all times with both university officials and local law enforcement.

* Investigations have been launched and are concurrently being undertaken by the PUPD and the University under its Anti-Harassment Policy and the Code of Student Conduct. University policies prohibit retaliation against those who report violations or participate in investigations.
